A garden in the early hours…

It was 2am it was too hot to sleep. It is said that when it is too hot our core body temperature cannot drop, which prevents us from producing sleep hormones like melatonin.

Anne Marrow Lindbergh has said ‘good conversation is just as stimulating as black coffee, and just as hard to sleep after.’ And Homer would add: ‘ there is a time for many words, and there is also time for sleep.’

But then there is another person, a poet, I wonder if you know his name for he once said that his work was to point out frauds, start arguments, shape the world and stop it going to sleep.

Does the garden sleep?

I saw an old post of mine with a photograph of the patio garden with frost and ice covering every leaf and stem. Was it asleep? And so here is the same area when it was too hot to sleep…

The lambs ear has sent up spikes of purple flowers that are going to seed, the saxophage is thick because we have been watering the three rose containers and then a surprise…

The cardoon is enormous with more thistle heads than ever before. I am pleased because it was the first we ever planted 15 years ago, and while there were three others which were planted from seed this is the last one left.

To celebrate this plant here are a few photographs and quotes.

It is futile/ useless / pointless to get up early, stay up late, and eat the bread of sorrow.

Why?

Because God deeply loves you and sleep and peace are His gift to you.

It is David writing, a poet from long ago. The Bible has his writing in Psalms 127:2

Then there are some more words from this poet’s son, Solomon:

My summary:

Don’t be wise in your own eyes. Fear the LORD, leave evil. Don’t hate it when God tells you off. He corrects those He loves.

Wisdom and understanding are so important. They are like a tree of life. God by wisdom founded the Earth and established the heavens. You will walk safely when you remember this and when you lie down you will not be afraid and your sleep will be sweet.

Proverbs 3 is a great read!

Leonardo da Vinci also had an opinion on sleep:

As a well spent day brings happy sleep, so a life well spent brings happy death.

St John then records Jesus’s words: ‘Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go, that I may wake him out of sleep.’ And Paul says this for us and our dearest loved ones who are ‘asleep’.

In a moment in the blink of an eye, at the sound of the last trump, the dead will be raised looking perfect (incorruptible) and we will be changed to be perfect. This change will bring immortality. Sin defined by the law will no longer exist as well as death. Both gone forever and ever.

1 Corinthians 15: 51- 56

They say a cool but not cold shower or bath can help with that melatonin. It has been very hot again. No times in the garden then?

Take care,

Sandy 🙂
