Sabbath circular walk Danebury hill fort.

The fort was actively used from 1st century BC to the 1st century AD. Oval in layout it was originally built to defend the high ground overlooking the plains below.

There have been limited excavations most notably by

James Berry in 1924 which showed Iron Age and Romano-British pottery.

Here are four photographs looking over these plains:

The sun is high and summer is at its best. Warm, hot grasslands gone to seed some cut and gone short green. Trees and shrubs heavily leafed. An afternoon where once people lived but now we walk. They must have had courage do we?

What is fortitude? The mental and emotional strength to endure pain, adversity or temptation with courage.

Then this is what Francis Bacon said:

Fortitude is the marshal of thought, the armour of the will, and the fort of reason.

Then Paul speaks: Since we are surrounded by witnesses in large numbers let us get rid of everything that makes life difficult as well as the sin that tangles us up. And let us fix our eyes on Jesus the one who perfects our faith… the one who endured opposition from sinners, so that we will not get tired and lose heart.

Hebrews 12; 1-3

A closer look at all around us and a handful of marjoram and St Johns wort.

The marjoram is here and there in perfect dry, sunny areas where the limestone alkaline soil can be seen chalky white through the green of the grass.

Be always aware to pick for your own use only. This will be dried and made into tea or sprinkled on pizza.

A long afternoon of sunshine, shade, the earthy and menthol herbal scent of marjoram and the sound of the rustle of grasses in all lengths and stages. Light with lasting warmth continuing well after 9pm, July with August and September to come, our beautiful world.

Take care,

Sandy 🙂
