Gothenberg the Art Museum and a few streets.

And their words seemed to the men, all eleven of them, as idle tales, and they didn’t believe them.

The women were: Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary, the mother of James, and other women.

What were they saying?

Jesus is risen! He said he would rise again!

Luke 24: 11,10 ( Sandy’s summary. Read the chapter if you like. Dramatic!)

Our experience of Swedish people in Gothenburg all started when the tram doors shut in front of me with Bess and Roy on the outside! A quick, thinking  person saw things happening. From the outside, he pressed the button, and the tram stopped, and the doors opened. I was out and said an enormous thank you!

Not long after, we were soon standing outside the Art Gallery Roy, then got talking to another Swedish person who had a dog. The two dogs got on well, and this  person asked if we trusted her. A big question.

We chatted for a while and we gave the answer : “YES”. She took Bess and her dog for an hour to a park while we went into the art gallery, which is a “No Dogs Allowed” place.

Two Sweedish people who made our day! Thank you.

I knew we had a precious hour, so I quickly looked through what my top paintings were that I wanted to see, and here they are;

I was fascinated to read that Rembrandt often laid on the paint with a painter’s knife and also scraped it with brush handles and his fingers to bring the surface to life.

I then looked at eyes .

A fish eye from David Teniers 1610 – 1690 Fishmonger painting. and

Rembrandt’s The Knight with the Falcon.

With time moving. I will include some brush strokes that I noticed. I am sure you can match them with the paintings.

During the early 17th century, there was an increase in still life paintings as with the Reformation and the iconciasm of Calvin caused a decrease in painting for the church. Here is a display of still life.

In a side gallery, there is also a substantial collection of self-portraits. An area I would have liked to spend more time in.

And then, for those of us who like clouds, here is a small group framed.

I remember Dad Brian saying he loved to paint the sky as a young person and his mum  asking :   “What’s that? ” So he would paint a small plane to help her know it was the sky.

Walking outside from the  Art museum , the sun was sharp and  hot. The coolness and detail of this fountain drew us.

Streets

For sale in the old town.

I was impressed by the liquorice ice cream and salty liquorice sprinkles, so here are two thoughts:

What are those bulb things you’re slicing?

You’ve never seen fennel?

It looks like celery and tastes like liquorice.

Ken Jennings

It was darker than a pitch- black panther, covered in tar, eating black liquorice at the very bottom of the deepest part of the black sea.

Lemony Snicket

A while spent  in Gothenburg on a hot day in May. Thank you for sharing these moments with us.
