Thessaloniki Greece part 2

We looked at the city of Thessaloniki in the distance from the promenade along the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean Sea but now we will step into it.

Ernest Hebrard’s formal boulevards in Thessaloniki Greece.
Gone are the narrow streets and small buildings that were burnt down in 1917 instead he used all his architectural and archaeological knowledge to build around…
The Arch of Galerus built AD 303 to celebrate his victory over the Persians
in AD297
North of the Arch of Galerius is the Rotonda.
It has been used as both a church and Mosque. The minaret along side it is now the only one in Thessaloniki.
It is thought that it was the
Mausoleum for Galerius,
Emperor of Macedonia
Prima AD 305-311.
Walk a little closer to this brick work. There is nothing inside as it is not used anymore.

It was a public holiday and I enjoyed the quiet of the city. A city sleeps like a cat with one eye open ready to pounce. I am sure these chairs were out in no time for lunch.

There was also Aristotles toes to admire and his face on a garage door.

Socretes, Aristotle and Plato.

Theses three

Are said to have laid the philosophical foundations of Western thought.

Plato is the principle exponent of the immortality of the soul and he was led to this idea through Orphic and Eleusinian mysteries in which Babylonian and Egyptian views were strangely blended. This is a summary of what Kaufmann Kohler says in The Jewish Encyclopedia where he was a contributing editor of numerous articles.(1843-1926)

It is interesting what Paul says to the Thessaloniki people.

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

1Thessalonians 4:16

It was interesting to be in this city and think of people whose influence has been so great through many centuries.

Sandy 🙂

PS

Here are some sayings by : Plato , Soctates, Aristotle and Paul.

Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools because they have to say something.

Plato

One thing I know, that I know nothing. This is my source of wisdom.

Socrates

Anybody can become angry- that is easy, but to be angry

With the right person

To the right degree

At the right time

For the right purpose

In the right way

that is not within everybody’s power and is not easy.

Aristotle

Quench not the Spirit.

Despise not prophesying.

Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

Abstain from all appearances of evil.

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Faithful is he that has called you, who will do it.

Paul in his letter to the Thessalonians chapter 5: 19-24
