Jesus speaking: ‘ Whoever drinks the water from the well will be thirsty again: But whoever drinks the water I will give them will never thirst, but the water I give will be in the person a water springing up into ever lasting life.’
The woman: ‘Sir, give me that water.’
These words are recalled by John in John 4 : 13-14 and then he helps us to know that the water is the Holy Spirit. ( John 7: 37-39)
This post will look at the sculptural effect of loss of water on the cardoon leaves. There is change of colour, margin curves becoming tighter and the whole structure changing from malable to brittle and easier to crumble.
A lack of water causes chlorophyll to break down.
Underlying pigments are revealed and eventually the leaf tissue dies.
Without water the cells collapse and dry up.
I then looked at the difference between a tree leaf falling after a dry spell as compared to an autumn fall of a leaf.

They say that a dry spell leaf happens so it can fall more suddenly. No controlled shut down with the leaf pulling valuable nutrients like nitrogen and magnesium back into the tree as in autumn.
They say the dry spell leaf forms a special layer at the base of the stem really quickly to drop and save the rest of the tree from loosing more water. The autumn leaf ‘special layer’, the abscission, forms slowly over weeks leaving a neat protected leaf scar on the twigs.
They say the one prepares for drought the other for life after winter.
The first day of autumn is today.
