Bess and an awn.

Some thoughts about force. God never forced Adam and Eve to stay away from the tree of good and evil. God didn’t force people into the ark. He doesn’t force anyone to stay in connection with Him but He does say: ‘ Let your conversation be without covetousness, and be content with such things as you have: for He has said, I will never leave you, nor forsake you. ‘

Hebrews 13 :5

Awn is a new word for me. It rhymes with dawn, fawn, pawn, yawn, hawn and bawn. I got this list when I asked AI for rhymes with awn.

Our dear Bess with an awn. Who fawns? Me. Who pawns? Me. My English for a German tongue. Who yawns? Bess, Roy and me. Restless all night with a river roar and Bess retching in the early morn. Bawns and hawns in place we refuse to ‘sail’ through fields of gold!

Bawn – the defensive wall surrounding a traditional Irish castle.

Hawn – a harbour in Cornish English.

Here is the story:

Sunday morning early I was up with Bess retching. She was already limping as I had pulled a grannen/ awn/ barbed seed head out from her paw, on Saturday evening. I woke Roy, googled the nearest vet, knew I was no good listening to German answer phones. Ran to the locked beam, saw a lady purposefully walking – an early morning exercise type walk, asked her to help. She did. She spoke and then spoke again listened to music and spoke again and yes, it was handed to me to speak. ‘ You can bring Bess in, immediately.’ That was good to hear. The next hurdle was the locked beam. Another person walking with a rucksack ready for a day’s hike, yes they knew the cook who knew the owner who had the number. We hadn’t paid the night before because we were staying on. We paid, we left and we were all at the vet by 9 am.

No, they couldn’t see the broken bit I had left in, but they put thick paste and a bandage on. Checked her and gave her some powder for me to cook and give as slime in a syringe feed before her food.

Then back we went two days later and with a little shaving of the paw a broken awn came out, long and sharp. A hole left behind to be covered again.

In Germany, dogs most commonly get awns known locally as Grasgrannen or Grannen embedded in their paws. Once they latch onto the skin , the backward facing barbs cause the seed to migrate deeper into the body with every step. I guess this happens all over the world where cereal crops and wild grass grow. Check your dogs paws, ears, and body they can cause the most awful problems and see a vet quickly if they are hurting.

Bess, our dear Bess. I will place this with my memories and hope she stays safe and well.

Thank you for reading this.

Take care,

Sandy 🙂
