A Sabbath walk of 3.5 miles Coopers Hill, LanghamPonds, Runnymede.

Jeremiah speaks: ‘ For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’

Jeremiah 29:11

And

Then Paul speaks: ‘ For by grace you are saved through faith: and not of yourselves: it is a gift of God: not by working for it, otherwise you will be proud and boast about it. Because we are His handmade people (workmanship), created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God intended for us.’

Ephesians 2:10

Langham Ponds

These ponds were once part of a river channel that branched off from the Thames. The channel was filled in by river mud and fallen leaves over 400 years ago. They are fed by spring water from Cooper’s Hill and rainwater from the surrounding unfertilised grassland. The ponds are home to many plants and animals.

In 1215 these meadows were where King John of England and the rebel barons met to agree on principles such as limiting the power of the monarch and the right to a free trial.

Here are four ways in which the Magna Carta is commemorated at Runnymede:

The Magna Carta Monument built in 1957 to celebrate the 750th anniversary of the charter.

The Kennedy Memorial dedicated in 1963 to the 35th President of the United States.

The Jurors which is an art installation of twelve chairs by Hew Locke commissioned in 2015 to mark the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta.

Writ in Water is the most recent one which is an immersive space for contemplation and reflection created by Mark Wallinger in 2018. From the outside it is not clear what you will experience as the entrance is a dark circular passage reaching…

a circular light filled reflective circle of water.

The day was sunny and a large group of us enjoyed each others company.

Here is a thought about destiny from Ralph Marston: ‘ Your destiny is to fulfill those things upon which you focus most intently. So choose to keep your focus on that which is truly magnificent, beautiful, uplifting and joyful. Your life is always moving toward something.’

And

‘ It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.’

William Shakespeare

Take care,

Sandy 🙂

    1. We have walked this area often over the years but this time we took another route and we’re pleased we saw this one. There was a heron at the pond and I’m sure we could have seen more. No time to watch quietly when keeping up with a group!
