Jesus

Jesus in Greek is Joshua and this name means Jehovah is our Salvation. Christ His other name is derived from Greek Christos which means annointed one, Jesus divine role as promised Saviour.

Peter says this after being arrested and on trial for healing and preaching:

‘ May you all know, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth ( the town of ordinary people where others said nothing good came out of ), the one you crucified and God raised from the dead, this healing is done by Him… Neither is their salvation in any other for there is no other name under heaven given to people, whereby we are saved. (Sandy’s summary Acts 4: 9-12)

I travelled with the name Jesus some more and read this written by Paul to the people in Colossians. It was complex but I persevered:

‘ Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities, or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things and in Him all things consist.’

Colossians 1: 15 – 17

Looking at this Paul is making Jesus equal to God or in other words a perfect manifestation of God.

Jesus Himself says when talking to Philip: ‘ Have I been with you so long and yet you don’t know me, Philip? Those who have seen me have seen the Father, so why are you asking to see the Father? Believe me I am in the Father and the Father is in me.’ John 14 : 9,10

( I looked at Hebrews 1:3, Matthew 11:27 as well.)

Jesus also created the world with God.

Paul speaks: ‘ I want everyone to see this mystery of a fellowship which from the beginning of the world has been hidden in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ.’

Jesus is the initiator of creation and the recreation.

Paul says this recreation in Christ happens when we choose to be baptised like He was baptised in the Jordan, by John the baptist.

‘ Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father even so we will walk in newness of life after this public commitment of baptism.’ Romans 6:3-4 my words.

I chose to be baptised by emersion when I was 12 years old and I have found it a commitment that has shaped my life with a quality of depth and meaning in Jesus.

Jesus has conquered sin and death and has earned the right to resurrect all who put their trust in Him as Saviour.

‘ For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ Jesus shall rise first: Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.’

What does Jesus mean to me/ you?

For me Jesus is strength during difficult times, I forgive myself because He forgives me, I don’t give up as His life and teachings are a model of devotion, humility and mercy.

He is a source of peace, hope and love.

I then listened to Mark Finley Many will use the name Jesus

I hope you find this as interesting as I did.

We aren’t walking with all this rain so here are a few pictures I took at Wisely last week.

Oak leaves hanging on.

Bulbs in bloom under the trees with scattered clouds from a central position.

Paper – like bark peeling to leave red trunks with flecks of colour from spring flowers.

Take care,

Sandy 🙂

  1. Sometimes I pull a chair next to mine and envision that Jesus is sitting there… the feeling is so powerful at times, so intimate. Or I invite him to walk with me. When I do that, I become emotional for some reason. I have this need to just know Love is journeying with me through all of life. Thank you, Sandy, for your thoughts today.
