…so the garlic stayed on the windowsill…

Here are is a way of how God thinks of us:

Like mathematics: ‘ How precious are Your thoughts of me, Oh God how great are they when added up to make the sum. If I could/should count them , they are more in number than the sand: when I wake up I am still with You.’ Psalm 139: 17,18

And then:

‘ Search me, Oh God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there is any wickedness in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.’

Psalm 139: 23,24

A bulb of garlic in a ” del Rio Salado” ceramic bowl, left in the cold on the windowsill and it grew!

The bulb with paper thin skin covering 10 to 12 cloves and in some varieties of hard necked 30 to 40 cloves, started to split its brittle, papery translucent outer peel jaggered as it tore. Some of the cloves in their tight inner peel fell out on their side but still grew.

The fine straight green shoots perfectly supported by the bulb and cloves all slowly loosening. Some words for the skin: dry, thin, fibrous, transparent, brittle- white, flaky silver. A bulb of garlic left in a windowsill.

It will need to be in the ground soon, easy to know the point here, all green needs to be at the top and about 2.5 cm under well drained soil. They will be ready to take out when those lower leaves go yellow. A lot of growing to do as the future season in the garden lies ahead, rain, sun, rain, sun or sun, sun, sun, rain, sun, sun. We don’t know.

The bowl is hand painted in a characteristic style from Spanish and Arabic traditions. Here there are bright colours and a three-dimensional raised relief. This is all brought about by a specialised painting techniques.

‘Cerámico del Rio Salado’, the company that specialises in this traditional ceramic craft was started in 1969 by José Del Rio. The name ‘del Rio Saldo’ refers to a tributory of the Guadalquivir River that flows through the Córdoba region. This region is famous for its clay deposits and pottery, with a craft tradition dating back over 4,000 years.

Together the garlic bulb and the bowl, placed without thought have proved to be a perfect match. A welcome gift on the windowsill.

Some thoughts about colour:

‘ The imagination is a palette of bright colours. You can use it to touch up memories – or you can use it to paint dreams.’

Robert Brault

‘ When you want to make the main colour pure or bright, don’t just keep adding bright colours on it. Just make the colours around the spot darker and dull. It will give the scene dramatic effects. I think the life is the same.

Have a colourful day,

  1. If I was that garlic bulb I would also like to compete with such a lovely bowl and show off with beautiful new green shoots😜👏

  2. I always have a garlic bulb on my kitchen counter in a small red bowl, just always seemed the right combo, lol, now I know why. And I get those green sprouts on occasion too. You have a colorful day, too!

  3. The bowl is beautiful, and such a perfect receptacle for the garlic. I’m always annoyed when I have garlic that sprouts; I’ve never thought about putting it in the ground. I will need to research whether we can grow it, since many temperate plants don’t like our climate. Thanks for opening my eyes 🙂
