The stack and the tide

They stood at low tide and then today, New Year’s day the tide had come in and no one chose to stand there.

The stack I painted for my last post is less visible in the tide but still there. It was swirled about by sea coming in and going out, standing deeply so no sand could be seen at any time.

Tides

Sometimes low tides are high.

High tides even higher.

So what is a tide?

The regular predictable

rise and fall of sea levels.

So what causes that?

The gravitational pull

From the strongest, the moon then sun and earth’s rotation.

Often twice daily the Earth rotates through these tidal bulges.

Bulges of water on opposite sides of the Earth

And earth as these pass

we experience high tide!

There are two different high tides ;

a higher high water and a lower high water and so it is the same for low water and lower low water.

This continues to be modulated with tide ‘influencers’ like thermal expansion, barometric pressure changes, storm surges etc…

Earth’s sea, Earth’s tide.

But what about

Time and tide wait for no person…a rising tide lifts all boats…only when the tide goes out do you discover who has been swimming naked ( true character is revealed in tough times, this one is new to me)…go with the tide.

Some sayings well known

and equally interesting:

‘ When we focus on our gratitude the tide of disappointment goes out and the tide of love rushes in.’

Kristin Armstrong

And from a long time ago the author of ‘ Uncle Tom’s Cabin’, Harriet Beecher Stowe said:

‘ Never give up for that is just the place and time the tide will turn.’

Our sea, our tides!

We will experience tides in our lives in 2026 as we always have, these may be in who we are individually, in groups we are a part of, in the world in general but may each day allow for joy, peace and love.

Remember: ‘ Unless we say words easy to be understood, how will we know what is spoken, for we will be speaking to the air.’

1 Corinthians 14 : 9 ( a fascinating chapter on communication.)

Happy New Year 2026!
