Ilfracombe

A dancer and a closely filled museum.

First the fourteen-year-old dancer. She is a small sculpture 39″ / 98cm tall by Edgar Degas 1880 and she is the inspiration for Damien Hirst’s Verity.

His sculpture of Verity is 20.25m (66.43 feet) tall and weighs 25 tonnes.

Verity is her name
A noun, a true principle or belief
Is she the noun?
An allegory for truth and justice
She reminds me of this  happening:

' And God placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way to the tree of life.' Genesis 3:24

A sword she too holds but straight up, the skin present. The scales in her other hand skinless behind her back are unbalanced.
Her bare feet on scattered legal books.
The child in her womb is to the left uncovered as is her head, arm and thigh. She looks to sea, this half vulnerable!

' And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain...and later Abel.'
Then Cain killed Abel. Genesis 4: 2,3

Verity: true principle, belief in justice.

The child from Verity as she stands would die!
It is an allegory,Sandy, for truth and justice! It is on loan!

The day is grey but there’s a charm about the coastline town of Ilfracombe. Here are three photographs:

And now the closely filled Museum.

A fine place to spend time on a rainy day. It was started by G Palmer who in his own words said: ‘ In 1904 the lust to wonder overtook me…’

Let us look at what he and others have carefully kept here:

A pram, a golden eagle, a Great Northern diver, a Bittern, a whooper Swan, a Gannet…

Then a painting or two:

The detail from a watercolour showing a ship that was wrecked in 1796 with the loss of 46 lives.

Ilfracombe by John Walters
1748 -1826.
Wildersmouth Beach by Charles Deane 1794 – 1874. Oil Painting.

There is so much more. Please visit this interesting place filled with stories.

Back outside a blue and white umbrella with a few people on the beach. It is not too cold but very wet.

Ilfracombe which interested me today with a statue and a museum.

Our flag and Verity in the bay.

‘ A grey day provides the best of light.’

Leonardo da Vinci

Or

‘ Grey day. Everything is grey. I watch. But nothing moves today.’

Dr Seuss

Take care,

Sandy 🙂  no longer in Devon.
