Turin / Torino

In the foreground is the
Dora Riparia,
a river carrying soil, it is joining the Po in Turin before the three bridges.

We cycled on a cycle path into Turin from a campsite 6km away and followed the Dora till it met with the Po.

The Dora is significant, it was at the confluence of the Dora and Po that present-day Turin was founded in Roman times.

The invitation of a river:
To build
a village, a town, a city
Turin on the Po
Rome on the Tiber
London on the Thames
Paris on the Seine
Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade all on the Danube, and so the list goes on...

To have fun
on the water, in the water, next to the water

To make it work
Dam it, let it wash away our filth, irrigate our fields

So how do we accept the invitation of the greens,blues,red-browns, yellow-browns of our rivers?

Selectively, with reservations, perhaps respect.
Or
None of the above.

Mostly for our power and advancement and glory.
Perhaps!

Jesus speaking: ' The water that I will give you is of the type that you will never be thirsty again because in you and out of you will flow springs of this living water. But you must drink it.'John 4:14 (Sandy's wording. This verse belongs to a story where Jesus and a feisty woman have a chat.)

The city of Turin in a few June photographs and then we will go into the  GAM.1

The unification of Italy is commemorated in this detailed statue of
Victor Emanuel of Piedmont.
Notice the tassels on what he is standing on.
A Fiat in a shaded street.
With a tree on its side making an arch with its branches and roots bare.
We walk under its arch into this modern space.
There is an enormous amount of space in the city with vast squares.

I am particularly interested in the work of Fausto Melotti 1901- 1986. He was a ceramicist, painter, poet and theorist. He worked in different materials including wood, wire, plaster and ceramics.

Here are a few of his works where he saw music with its rhythm in shapes.

Paintings
The devil tempting the intellectual.

Melotti viewed art as a form of ‘ angelic, geometric feelings’ and the importance of personal intuition and the act of thinking in artistic creation.’

Here is his festival at the Tower of Babel.

It was difficult for me to match the names on the walls with the items in the room. I had to ask to make sure this was the correct name. This was a discreet method but unusual.

Name on the wall.

Upstairs art was placed in a way to make you think, mixed many periods on one wall with numbers. You couldn’t be influenced by a name. One then could look through a file to see the  painter’s name next to a number.

I naturally liked the following:

Turin, the first capital of Italy with space, trees and friendly people.

Take care,

Sandy 🙂

‘ The city is like a great house, and the house in its turn a small city.’

Leon Battista Alberti (1404 – 1472 He was an artist, architect, poet, priest, linguist, philosopher and cryptography. )
