A Sabbath walk:  Waltham Saint Lawrence.

Psalm 65: 5,8

David speaking in praise of God: ‘ By the awesome things you do you answer us, Oh God our salvation, You who are the hope of all the earth and sea… you who stills the turmoil of the nations. The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders, where morning dawns, where evening fades, you inspire creative joy.’ Sandy has made it her own. Make it for yourself. It is bits of a wonderful Psalm.

We walked about 5 miles in the Waltham Saint Lawrence area. Paths and roads across fields of Rye, and fields of grass interwoven with cowslips and dandelions with high hedges of hawthorn in white heavy blossom edging them.  Spring lambs lie under fully leafed oak trees that show how much sun we have had this past week. We were also delighted to go into the small, perfect church of Saint John the Baptist Shottesbrooke. One we haven’t been in before as it is normally locked. A quiet, blessed place.

The day was warm, then suddenly went cold with grey clouds coming in with a light wind. I wonder if it will rain.

Here are seven photographs and quotes. I let my quotes travel, and they sometimes/no often jolt my own thinking. Let us travel:

Canola and wheat/ rye
Sheep with their lambs.

I will travel with sheep.

Here is a quote said by three people in much the same way at very different times. The first I found  dated  from about 356- 323 BC from Alexander the Great, then Daniel Defoe 1660 – 1731, and lastly  Charles Maurice de Talleyrand 1754- 1838.

‘ I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep; I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion.’

While researching, I read that in a field near to where we were, a silver coin was found ; Amyntas, the grandfather of Alexander the Great. This fits with evidence of a Roman temple in this parish.

The simple, peaceful Saint John the Baptist Church Shottesbrooke.

I travelled with the word stained glass:

‘ Some days seem to fit together like a stained glass window. A hundred little pieces of different colour and mood that, when combined, create a complete picture.’

Maggie Stiefvater

‘ The Internet is the stained glass picture of the 21st century.’

Diana Butler Bass

‘A lie preserved in stained glass doesn’t make it true.’

Saul Williams

Bess, Roy, and Richard walk lost in conversation under a tree .
They had no idea of what I saw behind them.

‘In a decaying society, art, if it is truthful, must also reflect decay. And unless it wants to break faith with its social function, art must show the world as changeable. And help to change it.’

Ernst Fischer

‘ A deep sense of love and belonging is an irreducible need of all people. We are biologically, cognitively, physically, and spiritually wired to love, to be loved, and to belong. When these needs are not met, we don’t function as we were meant to. We break. We fall apart. We numb. We ache. We hurt others. We get sick.’

Brene Brown. If you would like to hear her speak, press on the link at the end of this post.

Cowslip close,
dandelions tall
then far away hawthorn hedges
in a long row.
Wisteria was here ,
there, and everywhere in this English garden.

A walled garden to the left as you enter a long passage, there is about a mile from here to where our cars are parked.

A wonderful walk. Thank you to those who chose and led it.

Take care,

Sandy 🙂

Ps

‘ We herd sheep, we drive cattle, we lead people.
Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way.’
George S. Patton.

Motivational Instinct Brene Brown 15 minutes. I found this interesting in relation to her quote.

  1. How wonderful Sandy. I appreciate your thoughtful collection of photos, quotes and prose. Well done. I will follow your blog with curiosity and admiration for your work. For someone who lives in the high desert of New Mexico this is a breath of fresh air!
