The sun was bright this morning, which made for sharp cold shade in the town of Albufeira.
Before we see the sunlight and shadows of the present tourist town, let us consider what has happened here since the Roman’s built their roads and named this town Baltum. The Visigoths were next, then the Muslims and the Moors who strengthened the town defensively and agriculturally. It took a while for it to be taken in 1249 by the forces of AlfonsoIII.
I then jumped to 1755. Albufeira was one of the Algarve towns most affected by the Lisbon earthquake. The buildings along the coast were destroyed, and the town was inundated with 10m( 33ft) waves. The old church once a mosque collapsed on 227 residents looking for a place of safety.
Then, in 1833, during the Liberal wars, many of the town’s people were executed.
The town continued. The people living there in the early 20th century were making a good income from fish and nuts, but this declined, and in the 1960s, it became a hub for tourism.
Let us walk into this town of light and shadow in the form of photographs.

My mum was a wonderful mother. She died, aged 80, of Alzheimer’s disease, which was dreadful to watch. I remember she said to me : ‘ Believe in yourself because no one else is going to do it for you.’ I’m sure a lot of my success is due to her words of advice.”
There are many of her songs on utube. It is a sunny town full of people appreciating the warmth.
