Lords and ladies

Here is Paul speaking ” If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? But God has put the different parts together, making a body, as it has pleased Him.”

1 Corinthians 12:17,18

( Sandy says the body seems to be a fine’ combination of parts. 1 Corinthians 12 is humorous and thought-provoking.)

For a weed or wildflower on Wednesday , I have chosen Arum maculatum/Lords and ladies or Italian Arum , three different names for this plant. It is a wild flower and a weed.

I grumbled about this plant in a post where I put their acutely lined white and green leaves in a jug. They were classed as a weed by me as they were choking new minature daffidol bulbs, smothering their thin leaves with their large heart-shaped leaves. Spring had arrived, and their seeds spread by birds and leaving only a small piece of root in the ground made them something to contend with.

They are in the garden now as bright red berry covered stalks. The birds don’t seem hungry for them this year, and I may pick them and dispose of them as advised.

However, they are considered a native wild flower found throughout Britain. Their advantages are that they can grow on steep slopes and are ground cover in shady areas.

It is recommended that you use gloves as when working with them, they can make your skin burn. The whole plant is poisonous.

As you can see, there are at least three different weeds in this small photograph.
I have a lot of work to do!

I enjoy combining plant material, so , looking at the change of colour in some  leaves in the garden, I decided to place the Lord and lady berries with three different leaves.

We have cut down the day lily leaves, which have mostly turned golden brown in the heat while the leaves of the Cardoon that was beaten down by the rain are changing to yellow now. Surprisingly, the dandelion leaves from an earlier post have stayed green, I put them together , all three with the berry stalk of the Lord and lady plant in a vase. I am pleased with the details, colour, and shape in this combination.

Looking at the word combination, here are some thoughts I found:

‘ Patience, persistence, and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success.’

Napoleon Hill

‘ There are three principal means of acquiring knowledge…

observation of nature,

reflection,

and experimentation.

Observation collects facts, reflection combines them, experimentation verifies the result of that combination.’

Denis Diderot

‘ Concentration comes out of a combination of confidence and hunger.’

Arnold Palmer

Thank you for reading my post.

Take care,

Sandy 🙂

  1. I never thought to make an arrangement out of leaves but your post inspired me to pull some leaves that I like from the garden to make an arrangement too.

    1. Great that us what WP is for me. Ideas!!! I saw a blog where they let different long leaves dry and twisted wrist bands in different ways and then tested the strength. I think you have great skills.
