Delft Holland

Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His  mercy endures forever. Psalm 107:1

The park up in Delft was a short walk into town. It was humid, which led to rain now and then through the night. Our time was spent in the Botanicle garden of Delft looked after by the University , the Delft museum, and factory and a little time in the central square of Delft.

Bugzy parked, looking into the water of one of the canals leading into town.

The Botanicle garden

The tropical houses provided some colour, while the grounds with mature, well cared for trees did have a lot of ivy spreading itself in an invasive manner.

Here are a few bright spots:

Delft Museum and factory.

I have chosen to look at vases of flowers and trees. I asked permission to take photographs.

I was delighted to find this up to date link  showing you exactly what I saw today Royal Delf porcelain in the Netherldans. Press on here . I think the man explaining was the same one who told me, ” Don’t touch it! ” It looks very tactile once dry.

Then, into the streets and overhearing a guide tell this story:

” Can you see the tower on the church? Why do you think it is brown, yellow, and black? All in three different sections?”

A silence.

There was a fire and the original spire burnt down. The Dutch ordered the bricks from Germany. They were the wrong colour but they built the tower anyway. There was a severe storm. Lightening struck the tower. It fell. They ordered some bricks. They came. They turned black from polution. Their material was more absorbent than the last set of yellow bricks, hence the change.

Let’s look at this famous tower:

The square had some fine Dutch buildings :

Delft ware and cheese for sale, and can you spot  “The girl with the pearl earring “on a plate. The painter of this well-known artwork, Johannes Vermeer 1632 – 1675, lived and worked here in  Delft all his life.

Johannes Vermeer married well and was able to use good quality paints. His eye for and ability to depict light with precision and care led to him painting only about two paintings a year. There has been a question about whether he used mirrors and reflections. An interesting video about his work is here Vermeer Master of light.

We walk back to Bugzy. The canal gate for the boats is now closed , I stand and look from the spot where Vemeer painted his city from. I feel pleased to have slept by a canal he knew. A special day.

Tot siens Holland. Until we see you again.

Sandy 🙂

Some quotes with until.

Nobody cares how much you know until they know you care.

Theodore  Roosevelt and now one from Eleanor Roosevelt.

A woman is like a teabag. You can’t tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water.

Sometimes, we make the process more complicated than we need to. We will never make a journey of a thousand miles by fretting about how long it will take or how hard it will be. We make the journey by taking each day step by step and then repeating it again and again until we reach our destination.

Joseph B. Wirthlin.

  1. I enjoyed this! A good thought from that YouTube video you linked – how to tell the real from fake delftware – you need to know the colours, trademark etc. ( there are lessons in that!)
Women are like teabags. Good one!
