Come our guide is a history student from Oslo University. An enthusiastic sharer of the past.

Our first house to see built just after the plague. Let us look at the layers on the roof:

It is grand until we are told twenty people spend winter together in this space.

Let us go inside: a very long table. There is order, the head of house sits on a chair. Children in birth order. Mother and daughters on one side ,sons on the other. At the end of the table, the farm hands.

They crafted during those cold days of being together. Women weaving men carving wood.

They also died.

A door for the dead is constructed behind the double ‘sitting’ bed. If the person was good, that’d be fine, but what if it was judged evil? Both good and bad people’s bodies went through this door. Evil spirits were thought to come back through the door they went, so this door was nailed closed and definitely not the front door.

The 1800s brought the prairie style school house. Norwegians who had been to America came back with this idea, and each group with 30 or more children had a school house. The purpose was to teach children to read the Bible. The classroom had a map of Palestine, and each child knew where Jesus lived and walked on Earth. The map of Europe was not as important. Let us look at some details.
