Agava and aloe vera

The steps of a good person are ordered by the Lord: and that person is happy in that way . Though the person falls, they will not be completely cast down: for the LORD holds them up with His hand.

Psalm 38: 23,24

Agava and aloe vera both succulents, not cacti.

Aloe from Africa,

Agava from the Americas.

Aloe teeth are soft to the touch, and the leaves break easily to give the gel inside.

Agava have larger, spinier, painfully sharp ‘teeth’ the tips can be used to make awls for basketry. Sharp shears are needed to cut the leaves, and they may be used to make sisal and then used to make rugs.

The Westgate Arid Garden opened by their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall 17 July 2009 had some architecturally fine specimens of Agava. Our visit to it as part of the Ventnor Botanicle Gardens on the Isle of Wight was a pleasure.

I was particularly drawn to one plant with one of its leaves  bending forward in a  curve, with a dark shadow. The smooth bending back of the leaves is a characteristic of the plant, but this leaf was different.

Here I enjoyed looking at this one leaf which, when I saw it,
made me want to experience the shape and smoothness with paint on brush
and I did enjoy spending the time. The background was inspired by the drying leaves around these succulents.

Back home, I looked at the aloe vera growing in an area that is sheltered from frost but has no heating.

It has filled the pot, and I will need to divide it into various pots as it has proved to be a vigorously growing plant. I don’t think it can be planted outside. Our frosts would challenge it.

Some thoughts on forward:

Don’t dwell on what went wrong. Instead, focus on what to do next. Spend your energies on moving forward  toward finding an answer.

Denis Waitley

You are always a student, never a master. You have to keep moving forward.

Conrad Hall

Even if you fall on your face , you’re still moving forward.🤣

A last look at the arid garden on the Isle of Wight. The hottest garden in the UK.

Take care,

Sandy🙂
