Saville Garden 7 April 2024

And the Lord God planted a garden…and there He put the man he had formed.

Genesis 2: 8
A building that floats.
No pillars inside to be seen but a roof of honeycomb wood clad metal  and green planted roof  of Microbiota decissata and Juniperus squarnata.

This structure houses amongst other facilities a cafeteria with views over this grade I listed garden. The garden was commissioned by George V and created by Sir Eric Savill in 1932.

Today, it welcomes one with maroon red double tulips bringing pops of colour. These are sheltered by box hedges, grasses, and various hardy plants that will be here for the duration of summer. A curving welcome bed to lead the eye into the gardens.

The season and  weather dress this garden. The latter changing its mood dramatically with gusts of wind or slowly as clouds sail past the sun.

Leaving the Saville building let’s walk over the Casson bridge.

A mallard duck in the foreground with bright orange feet leads the eye to white skunk cabbage.
( Lysichiton camtschatcensis).
A plant they say smells disgusting. Today, there is a breeze,  and it is not blowing our way.
This tall lily is dramatic in sculptural looks and in large numbers growing out of its swamp like environment.

Our eyes are then drawn to the  Bulb meadow.

Yellow the dominant colour, but in it are snakeshead and flecks of blue and white.

A large glass structure behind the rose garden houses temperate plants and a fascinating whirlpool of water.

The  Charybdis (a sea monster in Greek mythology)
This feature brings movement and focus.

A two mile walk and out of this area back through the Savill building is the Valley Gardens. A place we brought our boys at least once a year. The area has been planted with azaleas, orange next to shocking pink next to purples of different shades, white and red. It is a valley of energetic colour. Today, they are only starting their display.

They are a shrub that grow with their roots in acid soil, their leaves in filtered/partial shade, and with these requirements met, they grow slowly but  are ever green.

Azaleas in the valley garden.  Photographed in the sun…
…then red azaleas in the shade with millions of buds ready to open.

A day in the first week of April, I am now 68 and look forward to tomorrow  but most of all, I am enjoying today .

Happy Monday!

Sandy 🙂
