Remembering a possible move to the USA.

Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.

Psalm 4:1 ( I particularly like Charles H Spurgeon’s Bible Commentary on Psalm 4  google it rather than go through a link. That is what I did.)
The phone down stairs.

Roy had his green card. I had given up my part time teaching job at the beginning of the term/semester. A couple from Australia were interested in living in our cottage temporarily and other than packing our cases we were ready to go.

My heart wasn’t entirely in this move, the work on the cottage, all the time enjoyed with different friends, the children settled at school… to name just a few good reasons to stay.  I had already done this ‘ move to another country’ from Africa to England and  I felt uneasy.

It was with uneasy feelings I bent to tie a son’s shoe laces or was it a tie I was straightening, whichever , and I felt the sun on the back of my neck like a hand. It was warm and strong as I bent at that backdoor with the 6 foot wooden garden gate ready for me to open and walk with our boy’s  to school.  I paused and thought a strong thought. ‘ If you love me God and you love this couple who would like to live in this cottage. Please do what is right for both of us.’ I know what I was actually saying – ‘ I’m not strong enough to do this move but if I have  to then give me strength.’

I think it must have been a week or so later when at 3am in the morning the telephone rang.  A phone plugged into a wall, a phone that rang with the same voice that all other phones rang with, a phone you could run to, walk to or amble to depending upon who you thought it was. Roy was down those stairs and there on top of the piano was the telephone still ringing till he lifted the receiver. The answer was a change in plans we were not going to the USA!

When the phone was tied with a wire ,

Humans were free!

Remember when you used to call a person 57 times, and hang up, and they never knew it was you.

Unknown 🤣

And here is some history:

Antonio Meocci , 1854 , constructed telephone – like devices.

Philipp Reiss, 1861, constructed the first telephone  today called the Reiss telephone.

Alexander Graham Bell was awarded the first U.S. patent for the invention of the telephone in 1876.

I hope you have a good weekend. A lot of rain expected here. The garden is grinning green.

Sandy 🙂
