Hypnum cupressiforme (Cypress plait moss) with Viola and curry plant growing near.

I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in Your salvation.

Psalm 13 : 5
“Moss that is concentrating on being green.”🙂
Jeanette Winterson.

Above is Cypress – leaved plait moss (Hypnum cupressiforme). Its shoots lie flat to the bark and turned to one side at the tips. The moss is irregularly branched with leaves untoothed and with no obvious nerve. The plant is mid – green which on the RBG model is comprised of 30.2% red 54.9% green and 34.12 % blue. It is sometimes tinged with brown.
This cypres – leaved plait moss is growing on a pile of conifer wood in our garden. It is also on the brick wall holding the pile back. My husband and son put in many hours of hard work, quite a few years ago, to chop the darkening hedge down. We kept the wood for insects to make homes in, and so they have. The plait leaf moss which is very common on acidic to slightly base – rich bark has also found it a good place to be. This moss can also be seen covering entire tree trunks. It grows like an extensive mat.
“Moss is inconceivably strong. Moss eats stone; scarcely anything, in return, eats moss. Moss dines upon boulders, slowly but devastatingly, in a meal that lasts for centuries. Given enough time, a colony of moss can turn a cliff into gravel, and turn that gravel into topsoil.”
Elizabeth Gilbert.
These three are close to each other in the garden and now too, on this slice of wood. Cypres-leaved plait moss, viola and curry plant all from a January garden.

Moss is selected to be the emblem of maternal love, because, like that love, it glads the heart when the winter of adversity overtakes us, and when summer friends have deserted us.

Henrietta Dumont.
