Many years later while having a family lunch which included some of my sons’ friends, one of them smiled broadly and said he knew exactly where this jug had been made. I was immediately interested. Apparently during his holidays from university , to help with his fees, he was a cleaner and sweeper in the rooms where the jugs were created. I wish I could remember exactly where he said it was in this country.
The process of making Majolica includes applying tin enamel to a fired piece of earthenware forming a white, opaque, porous surface on which a design is painted .
The most dominant themes are fauna and flora, especially leafy patterns. The completed design is then coated with a transparent glaze and the piece is fired again . This jug would have been moulded. Most Majolica is unmarked, but the European pieces often feature a mark or a series of numbers pressed in before firing. Mine is very faintly marked. Majolica is soft and porous and chips easily, so it has to be handled with care.

Yes it has brought me a lot of joy. I was quite cross with my husband at that point in our marriage. This jug now reminds me of that time with a smile😃! We all have those times!!!
