Fragaria ananassa or geum macrophyllum

This post will look at these two plants but first two answers to a question. You decide the question.

John is speaking: ‘Whoever commits sin knowingly also breaks the law: for sin is knowingly breaking the law. ‘

John then continues like this:

‘ And you know Jesus was made visible to take away our sins; and in Him is no sin. Whoever stays in Him doesn’t sin: whoever sins has not seen Him, neither known Him. Little children, let no person deceive: you righteous people do whats right even as Jesus is righteous.’

Now for an interesting happening in the garden. There is a plant coming up wherever we hand watered all through the summer. At first I thought it may be garden or wild strawberries but no. Having read about it this is what we have down the lane and in other gardens as well as ours, wild geum macrophyllum.

The leaves grow out the ground in a circle ( abasal rosette) and then there is something odd. If you look closely the very end leaflet is disproportionately huge, heart-shaped, or rounded with shallow lobes. The leaves further down the exact stem are tiny by comparison and look like strawberry leaves.

Geum macrophyllum. The leaf has a soft hairy underside.

It spreads agressivelly and can quickly crowd out slower growing plants. It self-seeds with hooked seed bars and has to be dug out, roots and all. It was introduced in 1500 and is classified as an invasive naturalised neophyte.

Definition of a neophyte: ‘A plant species that was introduced to a geographical region by humans after the year 1500.’ ( 1500 was the time from when there was a massive increase in global travel.)

So the strawberry plants and wild geum were at first diffucult to tell apart.

A strawberry plant.

Our autumn is warm and the plants are growing well with light showers of rain now and then. Even the grape hyacinths and a few of the bulbs are well above ground. I wonder what winter will hold for these eager plants. May they travel well.

Take care,

Sandy 🙂
