I never took its tubers in for winter and it bloomed here last year 2025, I am pleased to record it here. It is planted well off the ground in the cupboard planter. One Dahlia plant with a few flowers.
Then there is the well established Sedum. It seems to have appreciated the warmth of summer but probably not the heat waves. It will soon be open for the insects.
The new rose bought last year at Wisley is blooming for a second year. It is the Catherine Rose named after our Princess Catherine. I watched this one open. It is a fine rose with a good perfume.
September is a good time for planting new roses because the soil retains summer warmth while the air temperatures cool down. Gardeners should stop fertilizing roughly 6 weeks before the first expected frosts to prevent fragile late season growth.
And here is a kind thought by an unknown author:
‘ When autumn darkness falls, what we will remember are the small acts of kindness: a cake, a hug, an invitation to talk, and every single rose.’
And then I guess this will be the last one of the water lilies for 2026. The pond is very low but as I photographed I did see a shy fish dart between the floating leaves.
