Katwijk aan Zee Netherlands

I am first going to travel a while with the Lord’s Prayer as found in Matthew 6: 9-13 and compare what Jesus taught with what was written in the Old Testament.

Isaiah is speaking to God, here he is in mid flow: ‘ Look down from heaven… doubtless You are our Father, our redeemer; Your name is everlasting.’ Isaiah 63:16

Jesus when He teaches His disciples to pray starts with these words:

Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be your name.

David says : holy and reverent is His name. Psalm 111:9

Daniel 2:44 talks about a kingdom.

‘And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom will not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.’

Jesus continues to pray: ‘ Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.’

Moses writes: ‘ Know today, and consider it in your heart, that the LORD he is God in heaven above, and on the Earth beneath: there is none else.’ Deuteronomy 4:39

Jesus then talks about food: ‘Give us our food for each day.’

God speaks to Moses: ‘ Look I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people will go out and gather it, a certain amount each day, that I may prove whether they walk in My law, or no… on the sixth day they will need twice as much as they gather daily…’ Exodus 16:4

Jesus after asking about food says this: ‘ And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.’

David says: ‘God hasn’t dealt with us as our sins deserve or rewarded us according to our wrong doing. For as heaven is high above the Earth, so great is His mercy toward those who respect ( fear)Him.’ Psalms 103:10

Then there is this difficult bit.

Jesus says: ‘ And lead us not into temptation , but deliver us from evil.’

David says this to God: ‘ Don’t let my heart seriously consider evil, to practise wicked things with people that work with sin: and don’t let me eat their fine food.’ Psalm141: 4

Jesus has these final words to end a prayer He was asked to teach.

‘ For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.’

It may have been Ezra, a priest who wrote this in the first book of Chronicles 29: 11, this is what is said:

‘ Thine, LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, LORD, and You are exalted as head above all.’

Jesus’s disciples got a prayer to learn that was consistent with the Old Testament and a reminder that all scripture is God breathed.

I enjoyed travelling with this Scripture and I hope you did also.

Now for the walk we took to see the Old Rhine ( Oude Rijn) enter the sea.

The wind was cold and gusts of it took loose jackets and hair in whatever direction it chose, but with the white sands, grasses and people enjoying the day we did too.

There were posters that reminded us that between 1870 and 1914 an artist’s colony , the Katwijk School was here. Two boards had these names on them: Edgar Farasyn a Belgian painter and then Hans von Bartel a German who made oil sketches here and then produced gouache paintings in his studios in Munich.

The painting done by Hans von Bartel had a story with it. It refers to an event where a grandmother must inform her son of the death of his wife during childbirth.

More of his paintings can be seen if you press his name at the end of this post.

We continued to walk but I wanted to get a photograph closer to the water on the wet sands and here was a surprise.

I had watched a young child being taught to surf in white foamy water at Sagres, Algarve, Portugal and had appreciated the hard work of both of them. Here, however the wind was playing and I couldn’t resisit a video.

This is called “May suds”. The phenomenon is caused by the breaking down of algae, which release proteins that combined with strong winds and wave action, whip the water into thick foam. This is common in spring and summer.

I got my photograph of the wind and I was eager to have a go at painting it. Here are both.

“May Suds”

By me

But more gloriously free, full and fun filled,

By the wind.

Thank you for reading/ looking 🤭.
