Robin Hood’s Bay North Yorkshire

Moses is speaking first about God and time and then us and time:

‘ For a thousand years in Your sight are but a yesterday, when it is past, and as a watch in the night… The years of our life are 70 or even by reason of strength 80, yet they span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away.’ Psalm 90:4,10

Robin Hoods Bay is 252 miles from Turville. ‘ So what!’ you may say.

But I am 70 and I want to go back to North Yorkshire, the county I arrived in, on that dark winter morning.

We were newly married then and as a treat go back because I am 70.

So here we stand at the top of a steep road.

A fishing village built in a fissure between two steep cliffs. Sandstone houses with red-tiled roofs. King’s Beck, to see and to hear runs onto the beach near a cobbled slip way.

We are at the bottom of the hill now our hearts thumping to the the throb of our knees. There are two headlands,Ness Point (north), and Old Peak (south).

But what is between?

Something strange started happening yesterday, lets show and tell or tell and show. Be patient I need to set the scene.

My Birthday of 70 years on the 7th, in case you forgot, suddenly had more sunshine than all the days before. Then Wednesday the 8th came along and that was balmy too.

Then this happened: the beetles in the heather grew too hot and flew several miles to the cool.

Where was that cool air but over the sea. And what can a beetle do when it has run out of fuel and they are over the sea?

Well land in the sea and float the tides to shore…

Look with me.

See that dark line. Those are all heather beetles…

Look more closely on this yellow stone…

Lots and lots…

Robin hoods bay today.

But it is not all beetles, there is so much on the shore. Black jet stones come in with rotting seaweeds and cliffs tumble to the sea often with fossils, and nature fills a surprise packet of ‘ what do you think did/ made that?’

This way and that way stones trapped and tossed to make grooves or what do you think?

Seaweed hair styles on rocks and ripple sand grooves.

A cliff slipping in a dramatic background to a rock. We want to see it more closely…

Those carefully made slits what are they?

I don’t know, do you? The textures the colours , the order the randomness. Nature is beautiful.

The cold North Sea at Robin Hood’s Bay.

Take care,

Sandy 🙂
