Religion and travel then Heulva

I’m first going to let some thoughts travel. They will be from John’s writings. The disciple who loved Jesus very much. Then, two other quotes from people close to our generation. Let us travel:

Jesus speaking: ‘ If you love me, keep my commandments.’

John 14 : 15

Will Rogers: ‘ The minute a thing is long and complicated, it confuses. Whoever wrote the Ten Commandments made ‘ em short. They may not always be kept, but they are understood.’

John is now writing about Jesus as our advocate and goes on to say: ‘And we know that we know Jesus, if we keep His commandments.’ 1 John 2: 3

John Piper: ‘ To love God does not mean to meet His needs, but rather to delight in Him and to be captivated by His glorious power and grace, and to value Him above all other things on earth. All the rest of the commandments are the kind of things that we will do from our hearts.’

I travelled with a few other quotes but ended by listening to a conversation with John Lennox :Finishing Well. I found it helpful to me at this time.

Now for our travel here. I had trouble with the Internet last night, but I think it is fine this morning.
We travelled about 60 miles from Seville to Huelva. Huelva is a port city in southwestern Spain at the mouth of the Ofiel and Tinto Rivers.
We will start at a statue of Christopher Columbus, the explorer. It overlooks the palm- flanked square of Plaza de la Monjas. This is where the pedestrian streets of the old town meet. This port celebrates this explorer not only by statues but also by a garden and three replica ships.
First, the Botanico José Celestino Nutis created for the 500th anniversary of Columbus’s voyage, it honours José Celestino Mutis an astronomer and botanist by carrying his name. A person to remember. It is a 12 hectare garden showcasing flora from five continents, especially Spain and South America.
Not far from this garden are the replica ships: Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria. Their wooden decks curved far more than I expected, and their living areas very small. I came away with a new admiration for such people of courage.
We will end our day with a pier for leisure rather than industry, a site of cultural interest since 18 March 2023. It was built by the Rio Tinto Company as a wharf, but now youngsters can fish from it, and the locals enjoy the fine environment as they stroll along it.
Let us look at these places in Huelva. The staue of Christopher Columbus where the pedestrianized old streets meet. The botanical gardens established in 1993. I was particularly attracted to the water features throughtout the garden that reflected the vegetation so well.

Rosemary and lavender edging the aqua duct well through the trees.

A cooling stepped waterfall with a curve that spilled water from a height that made a soothing sound. One of the replica ships looking at the deck where you can walk and experience its steep slope. The fine pier enjoyed by us all.

A beautiful day in Huelva.

Take care,

Sandy 🙂

I like to look at other things people say and here is another quote from Will Rogers:

‘ Never miss a good chance to shut up.’
