Walking the Thames from Culham to Dorchester.

David speaking: ‘Show me Your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth, and teach me: for You are the God of my salvation…’ Psalm 25: 4,5

We enjoyed walking the Thames Path with our growing sons over a period of time.
Always starting where we had left off.

This will be with my memories.

Yesterday I was asked: When did you first walk here at Dorchester? This was the memory that came back to me.

The sun was drawing a line in the West and a September harvest moon was rising. We had been walking for three hours, our two boys and their friend. The village of Dorchester was wrapped in a soft glow of grey. Roy was making his way back to the car parked at Cullam and Sandy and the boys sat down on the pavement to wait.  Not a city curb nor a town one but an edging made with large stones, to be comfortable. I rubbed my younger son’s legs then a door opened a little down the road.

An explanation was made for our strange appearance and this was the response:

‘ Come sit in our house and wait for your husband..’

and we four did.

The two-up two-down house was quaint with bicycles for different ages in the passage and once past them a kitchen with plenty of places to sit at a long table. The beams were black and the walls and ceiling were once white. The cupboards were covered in artwork held on with Sellotape.  The house was strangely quiet except for the monotonous sound of a man’s voice. The children were all in bed. It was story time. We chatted in low quiet voices and it was soon time to let Roy know where we were.

It was an impressive evening as we left and said our thank yous and goodbyes, Wittenham Clumps and the Thames were in harvest moonlight.  Very soon our children and James their friend, like the kind lady’s children were soon fast asleep in the back of our car.

The Harvest Moon will occur on October 6th this year, as it can either be the last full moon of summer or the first full moon of Autumn.

Here is a reading of Carl Sandburg’s ” Under the Harvest Moon“.https://youtu.be/gpg4TDPIkyg?feature=shared

And a few photographs of Dorchester yesterday.

‘ Good and upright is the LORD: therefore He will teach sinners in the way. The meek He will guide in judgment: and the meek will He teach His way. All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth to those who keep His covenant and His testimonies… Pardon my iniquity for it is great.’ Psalm 25: 8 – 11

Take care,

Sandy 🙂
