Sagres and the beaches.

Religion

Jesus looked at a clever, rich man, and after he spoke to him, it is said Jesus loved Him. What was their conversation?

Young person: Good teacher, what must I do to have eternal life?

Jesus: Why do you call me good? Only God is good. You know the commandments:

Do not commit adultery,

Do not kill,

Do not steal,

Do not bear false witness/ lie,

Do not defraud,

Honour your mother and your father.

Young person: Yes, I know them, and l have kept all of them.

Jesus: There is one problem. Go and sell what you have and give it to the poor. That way, you will have treasure in heaven. Then take up your cross and follow me.

Young person: Looked sad and walked away because he owned a lot.

It is hard not to think after reading that, but let us go into a Fort.

We will start with words written at the entrance. The fort with one protective wall. The Fortaleza de Sagres has  another two sides, high cliffs with their footings pounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Here are the words that have this person’s name:

Fernando Pessoa ” Message” Prince  Henry.

‘GOD wills. MAN dreams. The task is born. God wanted the world to be whole, the sea to connect, and no longer divide. He chose you, and you went forth unravelling the foam. And the white rim went from island, to continent, clearing up, racing, to the end of the world. And the whole earth was suddenly seen, emerging round, from the deep blue . He who hallowed you made you Portuguese of the sea and us. In you, he gave us a sign. The sea was accomplished, and the empire undone. Lord, Portugal is yet to be accomplished.’

The Fort with its natural cliff walls as seen from the beach.

When visiting the Fortaleza de Sagres, take time to walk. The paths are well constructed, and the views remind one that the next land mass is America. A particularly interesting feature is a circular maze made of a high wall. This wall  amplifies the sound of the sea in caverns under where you are walking. The sound grows with intensity until you stand over a grate with views of the sea below. The experience helps one to realise how much sound is created in the caverns of the cliffs.

With the help of photographs, let us go to a beach and experience the surf of Prior Beliche. We were on Prior de Tonnel at low tide in the morning looking up at the Fort, but now  the tide is coming in with the surfers out on the waves.

A few moments of joy and then loss. Try and try again.

The coast wave and wind beaten into colours.

Raw red,grey,yellow,brown

The sea  blue I couldn’t include the sky. They  were almost one, and why do we need that?

How awesome is the land Earth

How dare we put its strength and vulnerability into words

Who are we? Here today and gone tomorrow. Yet, like the wind and waves, we wear earth away.

We are its keeper winning here and losing there

We are all so vulnerable yet so dominant.

Be aware! Take care of Earth but mostly of each other. We have each other for such a little while.

We all go with time with the wind and waves of life!
