Tonsberg and Sandefjord Norway

But the tongue no person can tame…out of the same mouth comes blessings and cursings. These things ought not to be so!

James 3: 8…10 ( Sandy’s summary.)
Tonsberg .
Its water was deep ,black, and reflective.
The town quiet with this burial sailing boat for two women AD834 held in calm comfort.
This is a replica built with Viking tools.
The original was found in the Slagen Valley just outside Tonsberg and is in  the Viking Ship Museum Oslo.

Tonsberg Norway’s oldest city was founded AD 871. Here are some Viking quotes, each with some depiction of this vessel as I saw it:

You never know how strong you are until being strong is your only choice.
Nothing good can happen to people who break their solemn vows.
It is always a strength to know the weakness of your friends.

Roadswetravelled spent one night in this town and then went on to

Sandefjord

The Whaler’s fountain Hvalfangstmonumentet.

Knut Steen (1924 – 2011)was a Norwegian sculptor. He lived here for most of his life and dedicated works such as the Whaler’s monument to the city. The city museum tells the story of whalers from this city… a sad one.

Here is the real skull and a model of  a whale. Other animals looked small compared to the one above our head in the lower picture.

We leave the town and walk and swim at Sandefjord.

Along the way, there was a pleasant sweet smell. Looking at the leaves of the plant I wondered if it were wild garlic but no…
It was
Lily- of – Valley.

The flower has six white tepals fused at the base to form a bell shape. The plants are self- incompatible, and colonies consisting of a single clone do not set seed.

To take another road with this post. Here is something from back home in England. In 2022, Lily of the Valley, said to be Queen Elizabeth II’s favourite flower, was the theme of the poem

Floral Tribute”

By  Simon Armitage the Poet Laureate. He published it a week after her death. Press on the link to hear the poet read it.

Fields of seeding dandelions.
Many more for next year.

Everyone has some friend, even among his enemies.

Viking saying.

Lupins growing wild in clumps here and there, a flower that gets eaten up by snails in my garden.
A joy to see.

Have a happy week ahead. It is raining heavily now! We have enjoyed the sun so much we can’t be greedy.

Sandy 🙂
