Holland: Hattem and Zwolle

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear: because fear torments. Those who fear are not made perfect in love. We love Him because He first loved us.

1 John 4:20

We had a park up near the harbour and next to the canal, a short walk from the city. The town with its pleasant gardens2

Hattem in Eastern Netherlands was first referred to in  ” the Codex Laureshamensis” in 800 and obtained city rights in 1299.

Our parking next to the canal at Hattem from where we cycled to Zwolle.

A museum of interest to me was the Voerman Museum Hattem. They are a  father and son who were both celebrated painters  living and working in the town. The father took a great interest in the surrounding fields and cows while the son painted many  flowers. Both the pictures below are taken from postcards.

The fields between Hattem and Zwolle with a ferry crossing of the River IJssel were much like the paintings of  Jan Voerman as we cycled to Zwolle.

The streets and shops of Zwolle

The shops with cheese  were packed full of flavour and delicious smells while the clothes shops were pleasantly colourful with spring in mind.

With a sat nav, we cycled to Zwolle. Then, with batteries flat and the ferry stopping at 6pm, we asked our way back to the ‘red bridge’.

Words now curl around the paths we neatly, courteously, and precisely follow. Dutch people with their favourite sounds in their ears. The more mature doing what they always do when they are on their way home from work no longer focused on the path but in their own world automation for the paths that get them home.

The paths are ordered and expect order and knowing for quick decisions. Carefully colour coded, you just need to know the names and colours. It’s not a great ask!

We loved it! Being lost a while. Finding a new way and then a little saddle sore getting back to bugzy parked at Hattem.

A town where many were working in their gardens and spring cleaning when we woke up the next morning.

Looking through the town gate. What do you see?
…my fields of Hattem.
Cows and grass!

Have a lovely time of day!

Sandy 🙂

Here is an interesting link to a ceramic artist and photographer who lives in Hattem.

  1. Love your painting! That sky is magic Sandy👏 It looks very tidy and clean in Hattem. I hope you have enjoyed Appel Gebak en slagroom?

      1. 😁I didn’t realise that you grew up in Zimbabwe. You’ve been around the world. We’ve been recruiting quite a few social workers for our borough in London from Zimbabwe and South Africa over the last 4 years.
