Helleborus in shadow

Isaiah making a prophecy  that Jesus would be like a great light. He says, “The people who walk in darkness have seen a great light. Those who lived in the land of the shadow of death, on them the light has shined. ” Isaiah 9:2

Then

Matthew 4: 14, 16

That it might be fulfilled which was spoken of by Isaiah… Galilee of the gentiles, the people which sat in darkness saw a great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light has sprung up. From that time, Jesus began to say, ‘ Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’

Isaiah lived about 749 BC toward the end of the reign of Uzziah. Matthew, at the time of Christ.

It was a special moment. I looked down in the night lights to see Heleborus casting shadows on itself.

Heleborus at night with a light almost directly above it.

Then I found these quotes about painting shadows.

The beginning and ends of shadow lie between the light and darkness and may be infinitely diminished and infinitely increased. Shadow is the means by which bodies display their form. The forms of bodies could not be understood in detail but for shadow.

Leonardo da Vinci
Here is a section of my photograph. Notice how the petals within the flower cast shadows on others in their group. The top one and second lowest one particularly. This adds more to the photograph, in my opinion.
Here are the Hellebore in the day. Still wonderful with their various tints but very different from the photograph taken at night. I guess they have their more subtle ‘day shadows ‘

Shadow is a colour as light is but less brilliant; light and shadow are only the relation of two tones.

Paul Cezanne

Here is my enjoyment of the moment. Extending the time by looking at my photograph the next morning.

Here is a thought:

Friendship is the shadow of the evening, which increases with the setting sun of life.

Jean de La Fontaine

Jean de la Fontaine was a fabulist ( a person who writes fables and fables are not parables, parables exclude animals). A fable is a succinct story that leads to a moral. Press on Selected Fables by Jean de la Fontaine to hear two of his stories. I found the readers’ accent from times past.

Have a good day.

Sandy 🙂
