Mint stalks 2023 and minature daffidols.

So teach us to number our days.

Psalm 90: 12

A gift of a vase. Fingers once dipped in blue, making smears around a well- formed smiling sun. This vase was given by the friends we played tennis with each Sunday for years and went skiing with. A pleasant reminder.

New miniature daffidols/ narcissus  peering out through legs of mint stalks still with their tenacious flower bearers dry and intact.

Cracked and chipped, but not broken.

Two thoughts on broken:

Trust is like a vase once broken, though you can fix it, the vase will never be the same again.

Walter Ingles Anderson

A more positive second one. This was written by Derek Walcott.

Break a vase , and the love that reassembled the fragments is stronger than that which took its symmetry for granted when it was whole.

Here is a poem he wrote in 1930

The Fist

The fist clenched round my heart

loosens a little , and I gasp

brightness; but it tightens

again.  When have I ever not loved

the pain of love? But this has moved past love to mania. This has the strong

clench of the madman. this is

gripping the ledge of unreason, before

Plunging howling into the abyss.

Hold hard then, heart. This way at least you live.

Derek Walcott 1930-2017 Saint Lucian poet, playwright and professor. He received the 1992 Nobel Prize in Literature.

Here is something about the life of Derek Walcott.

Father – a civil servant and talented painter.

Derek’ s father died when he was a year old.  He had a twin brother, the playwright Roderick Walcott, and a sister Pamela Walcott. Their mother was a Methodist and taught at their Methodist school. She encouraged her children to develop their talents. As a young man, Walcott trained as a painter mentored by Harold Simmons, and he greatly admired Cezanne and Giorgione.

His paintings were exhibited in Anita Shapolsley Gallery  New York 2007 the name of the exhibition was ” The writer’s Brush: Paintings and Drawings by Writers.” Press on Walcott to read more about him.

Minute brown curves, small lines. Attractive in its weathered brown looks.

Thank you for looking at this post. It travelled well, and I met an inspirational poet who I hope you experienced, too.

Sandy 🙂
