Jonquil and Cardoon

David is speaking to God: You prepare a table and invite me to sit down in front of my enemies: then you anoint my head with oil, my cup of drink is full and running over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will live with the knowledge that I am living in your House O Lord for ever.

Psalm 23: 5,6 (Sandy’s understanding of familiar verses. )

I went outside this morning for a little while.  The sun looked so inviting, but the wind was icy.  I will share what the garden shared with me.

A first 2024 jonquil in a special jug. Mom used to have oil in it on the table of our childhood home.

Hello, very new jonquil blown over and brought in. Out with the sun and the rain come the slugs they are all busy already.

When you see how fragile and delicate life can be, all else fades into the background.

Cardoon still standing tall.
The last standing after others fell.
It is difficult to capture the power of nature and its strength, but these have withstood a lot.

A very tall group of cardoon heads against a late afternoon sky. Here are some of the storms that have been withstood and have shaped your silhouette and reduced numbers:

Storm Gerrit (27-28 December 2023)

Storm Henk (2 January 2024)

Storm Isha (19 -22 January 2024)

Storm Jocelyn (23 -24 January)

Looking at a bowed cardoon separated from the group. It is a privilege to see how the once purple strands of nectar heavy carriers have twisted round an unseen centre as they hold seed.   Notice, too, the shades and highlights of browns that make the ever so slightly  tousled head.

It is only in sorrow bad weather masters us; in joy we face the storm and defy it.

This flu is so boring. It makes one feel so tired.

Stay warm and keep well.

  1. The close-ups of the cardoon are interesting, all the browns and patterns. Your first jonquil is lovely and now loved and cozy inside your home. Glad you attempted to get outdoors, but I’m sure it was a exhausting. Take it slow, Sandy, continued wishes for feeling better each day!

I remember that glass jug so well! Didn’t it have a glass top too?
