4 mile Sabbath walk at Burnham Beeches

Happy are those who don’t walk in step with the wicked… but who are happy to obey God’s law…that person is like a tree planted by water… they grow well… and whatever they do prospers.

Psalm 1 : 1-3 (Sandy’s summery.)

Into the woods we walked then…

Out of the woods

Along a freshly ploughed and planted field. Spring wheat. Perhaps.

Back in the woods

Autumn Fungi

All fungi are edible

Some fungi are edible only once.

Terry Prachett

Ancient trees to admire.

Here is some information gleened from a notice board.

Burnham Beeches

540 acres of woodland heathland and pasture
All protected
A European Special Area of Conservation
A national nature reserve
Site of Special Scientific interest

Beech trees normally live to 200 years
BUT these are pollards!

What is pollard?
A pollard is a tree cut to head height and allowed to regrow.
It is above the grazing animal's reach and grows for 10-15 years when it is
cut again.

The beech wood is used for furniture, charcoal or firewood.

All this cutting stimulates new growth
In this way, they live longer.
Some of these pollards are 400 to 500 years old.

Most are standing well except this one
I looked twice
I thought it was an elephant lying on the ground.
The fallen tree I thought was an elephant at first glance.

The days are getting shorter. It was colder with a little rain this morning then some sun low in the sky this afternoon when taking these photographs.

Continue to take care.

Sandy 🙂
