Turkiye

David looked at a palm tree and said: ” The righteous flourish like a palm tree.”

Psalm 92: 12 ( Sandy’s rephrasing.)

Travelling as sandyroybessbugzy is less planned than travelling with friends. This first week of October was planned for at the end of January beginning of February 2023. It was a group of 14 of us. Some of us knew each other from walking experiences in Italy and Austria while others in the group were new to us. We were all pleased to share our experience of Turkiye and now I share it with you.

The United Nations has accepted the new name for Turkey, which is
TURKIYE

Continuing on along this beach, one comes to the ancient city ruins of Side situated on a small north- south peninsula about 1km long and 400m across. Its natural geography made it one of the most important trade centres in the region. Side was founded by the Greeks, most likely in the 7th Century BC. Its deity was Athena, whose head was on its coins. The Romans have also left their distinctive mosaic flooring for us to see. The modern town makes provision for this by having thick glass pavements, allowing one to look down at remains from this time period.

A neat way of keeping antiquities safe and still providing space for the present people to have livelihoods.

Water for this city during ancient⁷ times came from the river Manavgat Cayi flowing from the Taurus mountains. This water was then transported for forty miles to the city where lead pipes were used to carry it to homes and a spectacular fountain. The Side Nymphaeum is a fountain built by the Romans into the walls of the city. The marble columns and remains leave enough to imagine how grand it was. A close copy was made in Italy by Septimus Severus.

Interestingly, these ancient sites were busy with people “putting them together again.” Here are a few pictures to see their activities.

The remains of the Apollon Temple with the pleasant palm trees in the distance.

Here are two very different quotes about a palm:

The palm tree that sways in the breeze stays standing the longest.

Shey Mitchell (A Canadian Actress and entrepreneur)

And

For it is the temper of the highest hearts, like the palm tree, to strive upwards when it is most burdened.

Philip Sydney 1554 – 1586 ( An English poet.)

Thank you for reading my post.
