Ayr and Culzean Castle

And the peace of God, which passes all understanding will keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:7
The mouth of the river Ayr as it enters the Firth of Clyde.

The Scottish town of Ayr in September sunshine provided contrasting experiences from marooned jellyfish to purposefully burnt buns.

The Daily Record for   25 July 2023 states that ” rows and rows of  the marine creature had been spotted on the sands of Ayr “. Now at the beginning of  September we had to be careful not to trip over them as we walked into town from our park up next to the sea.

They say that the jellyfish is a great indicator of change in our seas but more reporting of them being found needs to be done.

The town was quiet with bright bedding plants: blue, red, orange, purple and white. These were in front of the South Ayrshire Sheriff Court. The grey town hall spire pierced the blue of the sky as it was squeezed between rows of shops and possibly homes.

What was intriguing were the burnt buns. Many years ago they sold them more cheaply as a ” mistake”. People got to like them so much that they began to sell them at full price and purposefully made them that way. They do have an official health warning as a possible cause of cancer but while I was talking to the sales assistant another three buns were sold to a pleased customer.

Our view down the coast from Ayr…

…and my attempt to spend some time with it. To interact with a space so changing and yet so beyond my understanding of time… Then there was a castle. A well visited place in Ayrshire.

Culzean Castle

Culzean Castle was owned by the Scottish Kennedy family ( no relation to the Irish Kennedy family with the American connection) but is now owned by the National Trust. It is particularly well situated with varying landscaped areas: a walled garden, paths through forested areas and a scramble over rocks along the beach. A place to easily spend a full day at.

A pleasant time in Ayre and Culzean. Scotland has been almost hot so I leave you with this thought…

Life is a beautiful magnificent thing even for a jellyfish. (Not if you are left marooned by your sea on the beach.)

  1. Ah, I was tempted to taste one. Do you ever remember being given charcoal biscuits by your Mum. I loved them. Maybe I shouldn’t try the buns.🤣 I had so much pleasure with the paint brush and my ‘phone’!! Thank you for liking it.

  2. I really like your painting! Not sure about the burnt buns – look a bit too burnt for me. Should absorb gas if one has a problem with that🫢.
