Townend farm and Aira Force near lake Ullawater

Don’t be wise in your own eyes, respect the LORD , and leave evil alone. (My wording)

Honour the LORD with what you own with the firstfruits of all your increase. ( I’m not sure how to say this in my words. It seems a very practical thing to do. I will be thinking about it. ) Your barns will be very full if you do this.

Proverbs 3: 7, 9, 10.

It is not often that twelve generations of a family use the same farm house over a period of approximately 400 years. The last George Browne died in 1943 the first to be born was in 1525. Here is the ‘cats cradle’  all the Browne’s babies slept in this bed.. Look it is  at the foot of the double bed.

Notice the nobs on the side of the cradle. They were used to tie something across a cat didn’t sleep on top of the baby.

All  the George Brownes through the centuries were sheep farmers but the last one loved carving wood. The whole house is full of his additions which he sometimes dated 200 years earlier. Look especially for small children’s chairs he made them for his daughters. He also tried his hand at a “built in kitchen. ”

Looking on the walls there are quite a few paintings of sheep.

A painting by William Taylor Longmire.

William Taylor was a sheep farmer and  artist , unschooled but people bought his paintings.  According  to the guide he lined them up  on easils and mass produced them. This one was commissioned by the last  George Browne.  Look down through the facing sheep to see at the bottom of the valley, Jesus Church. The church and the mountains all exactly as they charmingly are. A pleasant way to see the area where this farm house is.

I enjoy seeing old staircases so let’s look at this one and have a peek at a few other rooms.

( I am having trouble putting the pictures in the right order. Never to worry I am sure you can work things out.)

Townend farm house with barn on the right.
A home that depended on large fires to keep it warm and light. Notice the chimney stacks

About 20 miles from here is Aira Force a waterfall near lake Ullswater. We are still in Cumbria and to be exact the Lake District. It won’t be long before we are in Scotland.

Aira Force.

The scenery is expansive. Thank you for appreciating a farm house and a falls. I am travelling with my husband and son.

How wide are those mountains?
I think you got them covered son!

PS I googled cats cradle and got this. I couldn’t help but share it. Being a girl who knitted with her Mum I also played this a lot. Press on cats cradle to enjoy it too.

  1. When I’m in historic homes, I imagine myself living there and in that time period. What would it be like to have a full day of chores, working in that home, cooking, sleeping there. Do you do that too, Sandy?

  2. Loved this post. It looks like the type of place James Herriot would visit to treat the animals.
Played with will like that too. Didn’t know it had a name😀.
