Vyne Estate gardens in summer.

Jesus is speaking : ‘ I love you as much as God does. Continue to let me love you. If you keep my commandments like I have kept my Father’s commandments we can stay in each others love. I tell you this so that my joy can stay in you and your joy will stay full.’

John 15 : 9- 11( This is Sandy’s wording. Read it and write it your way. It makes you feel loved.)

Looking at the beds that we last saw in January was a feast for the eyes. Children ran between them and butterflies were everywhere. Let me share them with you. If you would like to see our visit in January press Walking through the Vyne Estate Hampshire .

Dahlia beds

I was curious to know what was under the sheep’s wool covering these beds at the end of January this year. Today I was able to speak to a volunteer gardener picking flowers. Her answer was: ‘ We were doing an experiment: lifting some of the tubers and keeping them inside and leaving others covered with wool. ‘ She wasn’t sure which were which now but I did envy her chore of cutting sweet peas and gladioli today.

The rows of sweetpea plants clamouring up canes with an apple bough in the foreground.
Children were playing with the windfalls. (I mean throwing them at each other.🤣)
Calandulas with tomatoes growing closely between them.
A display of pink white and impressive deep blue agapanthers.
Press on the picture to see them in a circle at the back.
We called them Agie’s pants after a very strict great aunt Agy.
A rule was that we visited all the relatives still alive and Mum loved to visit the graveyard too, particularly her granny’s grave.
The Gran who had lived with them and looked after her and the other three children.
Long broad summer boarders brimming with plants.
The tree lined walk way ,
thick with leaves and shade.
The unusual couple ;
the ancient tree and the old building
in the background today,
because it is the plants that have our attention.
A wild flower meadow with cabbage whites darting here and there and a line of heavily laden apple trees out of vision.

This was an estate visited by Henry VIII in 1510 and here is a painting of a character who knew him.

Long beard , dog under his arm, clutching large leather gloves, a stick in his hand, all from 500 odd years ago.
Let me introduce you to Philip Chute/Chowte born by 1506 and died 1567.
He was Standard – Bearer to
Henry VIII …
and here is what you can see from the windows looking at these gardens..
Children playing and picnics soon to be eaten…
I wonder how we would get on with Philip Chute if he walked out of the picture held up by his stick, dog yapping at his heels and tried to tell us of his life.
Here is a gift from me to you,
the sweet peas the volunteers were picking were for sale.
I wish you could smell them,
very sweet and full of summer.

I hope you are well.

Take care .

Sandy 🙂

  1. Thank you for the sweet peas🥰. A fragrance like no other. Loved the agapanthus story – so true. 😄
