I asked Dad about Smallpox and this is what he said. ‘ You were a little girl and we were living at the issolation hospital …it was 1960 and we had our last smallpox patient. The nursing staff who cared for this person went in with them and only came out when the patient was no longer contagious. They had ulcer like sores appearing first on their hands then fee , face, the body last. Naturally occurring smallpox was destroyed world wide by 1980. It was airborne in respiratory droplets a horrid infectious disease.

Gardening is a long road, with many detours and way stations, and here we all are at one point or another. It’s not a question of superior or inferior taste, merely a question of which detour we are on at the moment. Getting there ( as they say) is not important ; the wandering about in the wilderness or in the olive groves … is the whole point.

I didn’t post for a bit nor did I read. Dad is weak but happy and well looked after by Shelly. Take care.
Sandy 🙂
Just a lovely post, Sandy. I’m glad you and your sister can take care of your father together. I can’t imagine living through the era of smallpox. Thankfully it was eradicated.
That was an awful illness. I remember seeing an iron lung in that hospital. Dad showed it to me at the age of 5 .
Yes, that must have been a difficult time. Smallpox sounds ghastly. Thank you for your kind words.
Thinking of you. Lovely to be with your family x
