Remembering the sound of falling plates.

God is my refuge. I trust Him.

Psalm 91 : 2
A picture taken off the internet.
A friend and I collected the same plates . I liked hers so much I chose to collect them too.
Mine came to a crashing end.
I didn’t give up I started collecting again. The naif design on each plate is different and detailed.

Travelling in Greece has meant a lot of mountain passes and we have been  braking a lot. It was between Pozar and Edessa that the brake warning lights came on. It was also when all the Melamine plates fell out on one of the switch backs. It was easy we just put them back in the cupboard….

I remember a time in the cottage with its thin “neighbourly” kitchen wall when putting plates back didn’t happen.

One of my sons has always been an early riser. (During his high school years he and a friend did two paper rounds each, often on cold wet early mornings.) This particular morning Roy and I were sleeping in when all of a sudden an awful crash brought us running into the kitchen. Our son’s little four – year old hands had lifted his body weight on the lower shelf of a cupboard  while stretching from a stool which must have slipped out from under him. There was a sound first of wood splitting from the wall then plates crashing.

Getting to the kitchen our son  was no where to be seen. There was just a “Mum!”  There in a space between two base units saved for a dog bed was our little son. The Villeroy and Boch plates broken around him, with chunks of the brick work attached to the wall plugs hanging with dust still rising.

We comforted him, had breakfast outside and went to church .

Upon our return there was plywood smoldering on the stove. The cupboard resting on the stove had budged the knob on. We were pleased we had got home promptly.

Reflecting on this I believe Roy and I have responded to times of crisis in a  “let’s continue our routines as best we can.”

Break and brake. Funny these homophones kept me guessing as I wrote this.

Break- to separate into parts.

Brake – this causes a car to slow down or stop.

I hope your week has breaks where you can  ‘brake your pace. ‘

Sandy 🙂

  1. I’m sure glad nothing happened to you on the road! Love your story. I remember you telling me about it when it happened all those years ago.

  2. Funny amazing how something that happens in the present brings back a memory! First, I know all about cabinets and fridges flying open while traveling in our RV, always was a problem. I used to bungee the fridge & freezer handles (we had a full size top double doors/bottom freezer), that was a huge mess if contents came out the top, ugh. Your cabinet mishap sure did trigger memory for you! Your poor son! So glad you did return promptly too, what a morning that was. And you handled it well, continuing on as you said. Does your son remember it happening? Maybe he doesn’t since you carried on calmly your morning, made it special by going outside to eat breakfast. 🙂 Seems we do remember such faint things in our wee years, I’ve got a few memories.
