These homes with towers represent a hard life in a wild place. They were built in the 18th and 19th century to protect from pirates and invaders. The towers were the seat of the fathers who had power and as a result destructive rivalries grew between them. The less powerful were sometimes made to lower their towers while others were not allowed to build towers at all.
They have a particular architectural form:
Built of stone, 20m or 4 to 5 floors high, small window openings, very low doors, walls at their base more than 1m thick.
Sadly, after World War II people left to live in big urban centers . The 800 towers of Mani were deserted, many collapsed but some have now been restored and become hotels or homes.
There is a good overnight stop right opposite the beach.
