Remembering the visit of my sister and her husband.

I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ for it is the power of God giving salvation to everyone that believes.

Romans 1:16 (Sandy’s understanding)
Dad’s Datsun looked so much like this one. (Photograh taken off the internet.)

When remembering that time this is what comes to mind: borrowing Dad’s Datsun estate car, pitching our A-framed tent in some unique places ,losing my wedding ring, the cable car up mount Blanc and the chats I had with my sister.

We needed a bigger car to go camping in Europe and Dad lent us his. We took Popsicle (the mini clubman) to Skelmanthorpe and after walking the walls of York, leaving Pachlan Purdy (our springer spaniel dog) with Mum, we took Dad’s Dutsun Sunny Estate and headed for Dover.

Our orange and brown outer tent with a cream inner tent took the four of us. It was easy to pitch and our first pitch seemed to be on some ancient walls. The walls of Reims. Then there were others: Latterbrunnen with its high waterfalls. I think five waterfalls coming down in a rush all night. A field below mount Blanc and later in the pouring rain of the Black Forest.

It was the emerald green of lake Interlaken on a very hot day that I remember most vividly. I think we started just paddling. The pebbles were colourful, smooth and comfortable under foot. It didn’t take long and we were swimming. I don’t remember my wedding ring falling off as my hands shrunk in the cold. It was a broad band and I loved it. We spent ages looking but everything seemed to be glistening. Our names weren’t on it and the years have passed. I wonder where it is? (Roy smiled and said ” We will be going near there soon. Shall we have a look?”)

Mount Blanc with its cable car took us up above the world. Afraid of heights I learned to look out and not down. We walked on the glacier and to the Italian border. I wondered if there was anything more lovely to experience in life. But there has been and will be…

Time spent with my sister at that stage in our lives is still irreplaceable. I am so grateful we had it.

Sisters are for sharing laughter and wiping tears.

Then as Marion C. Garretty, a famous author who was still alive at 122, once said:

“A sister is a little bit of childhood that can never be lost.”

Thank you for reading my memory of this time spent 42 years ago with my family, so close to where we will be travelling soon.

Sandy 🙂

  1. Ah, wonderful memories! You didn’t mention that you paid for my plane ticket… Thank you for that. A sister in a million🥰

  2. Oh, to lose your wedding ring, I wonder too what became of it, the story of who may have found it. How wonderful to be heading to visit the area that you once did so many years ago. Enjoy! 🙂
