Borne, Hengelo, and Appledoorn Holland

They loved their friend so much that they broke a hole in the roof to get him in front of Jesus, the healer. Jesus then said: ” Son, your sins are forgiven. Get up, pick up your bed, and walk.”

Mark 2: 1- 12 (Sandy’s summary, there is a disagreement about forgiving sins Jesus has a good answer I haven’t included this).

This is not just a photograph.
I want to explain something.

There is wooden play equipment. Yes.

There is a fenced off field for chickens and goats. Yes.

Then there is an elderly lady in her chair with wheels and a relative stroking her back. Yes.

What you can’t see is little children enjoying the animals too.

Our park up for Bugzy was one of two free places set aside for travellers, next to some assisted living homes each with a small garden and with access to the above as well as easy access to the  town of Borne.

What did the two ladies see in the church.

A free to enjoy exhibition celebrating the fact that he would be 100 this year.

He lived a full life from 1924 – 2005.

I think it was the curator who spoke to me. I made comments, and he added to them . It went something like this.

Me: He seemed passionate.  The red paint seems to be on women.

Currator: The people of Holland said he had five wives. It wasn’t quite like that.

Me: There seems to be mental distress and humility.

Currator: He was treated badly during the war and at one point didn’t approve of his work selling with so many 000 on, so he took it and sold it on the street.

We chatted a while. The painter had times when he needed psychiatric help and asked for it. Google filled in the rest of the story.

It was such a pleasant time, and the two ladies who were in there too, we chatted in Afrikaans together.  My language was rusty, but my mind travelled back to the bilingual school in Johannesburg, and that was a pleasure.

Hengelo

We need Bess to be seen by a vet, giving us then five days in which to return to England.

Appledoorn

This was our next stop. It is known for its parks and flowers. The town was full of local people. The sales are on, and the sun is shining.

Thank you for looking at this day of travel. A day travelling closer to home.

Sandy 🙂

Ps

Here are two quotes about towns.

I write about people in small towns, I don’t write about people living in big cities. My kind of storytelling depends upon people that have time to talk to each other.

Lee Smith

I have lived most of my life in small towns, and I’m in the habit of knowing and talking to everyone.

Ellen Gildchrist

There is a comfortable feeling in small towns. It is salubrious.

Andie MacDowell.
