Sounion

By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host by the breath of His mouth… Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.

Psalm 33: 6…8
Cape Sounion with the Agean sea on three sides.
A rocky area overlooking the uninhabited larger island of George.

Why is it called the Agean sea?

Here is the story in Greek Mythology: Aegeus, king of Athens had a son Theseus . They agreed that Theseus would hoist a white flag on his ship if he was alive . Theseus returning to Athens after his adventures in Crete neglected to do this. The father, Aegeus in great distress , mistakenly believing his son to be dead , drowned himself in the sea. The sea thereafter was called the Aegean sea.

Cape Sounion
The temple of Poseidon.
Built 444 to 440 BC during the ascendancy of the Athenian Statesman Pericles,
who also rebuilt the Parthenon in Athens.
Here are some facts:
the temple is
perched on the headland surrounded on three sides by the Aegean Sea , rectangular with colonnades on all four sides
34 local white marble columns
only 15 standing .
The centre of the building had a windowless room with a bronze statue of Poseidon facing the entrance as you looked deep within.

In Greek mythology Poseidon is Hera’s younger brother. Here is how he fitted into the family:

Cronus and Rhea had three daughters

Hestia, Demeter, Hera

and then three boys

Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus.

Poseidon is the god of the sea and water, as well as horses and earthquakes. He is among the most bad-tempered of all the gods, reflecting the unpredictable and often dangerous nature of the sea.

Here we are .
Sandy and Roy.
I guess we are unpredictable too
never knowing where we will go next.
Greece has so much more to see.

Place me on Sunium’s marble steep, Where nothing, save the waves and I , May hear our mutual murmurs sweep.

Lord Byron ( he scratched his name on a pillar. ‘NAUGHTY’)
A simple four petalled flower, a sea stock plant, growing amongst the dusty well worn rocks of the temple area.

Our architecture reflects truly as a mirror.

As you can see we have lots of sunshine a good reason to smile.

Sandy 🙂

  1. Great picture of both of you, Sandy! I don’t think I’ve ever seen the Temple of Posiedon before, so it was great to see that too. It sounds like you are having a wonderful time. Safe travels.
