Dodona

The worship of the Bible God demands that we have no other gods before Him. That there are no sculptured images or any likeness of anything above , or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the sea and that we must not bow to them , nor serve them because God says “I am a jealous God … ” Exodus 20:3-5

Exodus 20 contains the Ten commandments . The first four are about our love for God. The next six are about how we love others with respect.

Dodona in North West Greece, lies in a valley on the Eastern slopes of Mount Tomaros. It was a place where Zeus was worshipped.

Looking at the snow capped Mountain of Tomaros and stones from various temples.

In Hellenistic times Pyrrhus (319-272 BC) the king of Epiros made Dodona his religious centre, inaugurated a festival in honour of Zeus and constructed a large theatre and colonnaded precinct.

Dodona was sacked 219 BC, rebuilt 218BC, attacked again in 167 BC when the Romans conquered the king of Epiros. It was no longer a pagan site in 4th century CE (AD) after a decree by Theodosius. At this time an⁸ old oak tree was uprooted a central part of the worship.

The earliest mention of Dodona is in the Iliad where its priests are described as ” of unwashed feet, sleeping on the ground.” Homer describes Dodona as an Oracle of Zeus.

Dodona a typical Hellenistic theatre.
It can seat 17,000 spectators and is currently under reconstruction.

Some time during the reign of Augustus, the theatre was converted into an arena for gladiator games and animal fights.

Nature does nothing uselessly . (I agree.)

Aristotle

Here are a few Greek proverbs:

Win by persuasion not force.

It is not what they profess but what they practice that makes them good.

Pay attention to your enemies, for they are the first to discover your mistakes.

I hope you have a good weekend. I am sorry I haven’t been reading posts as much as I should.

  1. Amazing what we can learn from the ancient ruins and how time changes things and perceptions. I absolutely love the spring flowers and promise of warmer sunny times ahead!
