New trees and snow drops nearly gone.

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?…

Wait on the LORD : be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.

Psalm 27: 1…14 (the verses between are lovely too)

Popeswood Meadow
A new tree in the foreground with a distant aging oak.

Here are some of my thoughts I had after taking this picture.

Trees New and Old

The future in bright green, plastic swathed
The past in brownblack bark moss bathed
Today I saw a new tree, eight in fact.

Their glorious age I will never see.
The centenarian trees look on;
Their girth, their height
Their idiocyncracies of might
make sport of such unembarrassed youth.
They too were young when Alexander Pope looked on.

My family's time belongs to the aged oaks
It was under them we sat and played
Their shade fell over Pachlan Purdy , Patches and now Bess.

My memories lie beneath their rough old boughs the new trees are for another's life.

Sandy
The pond with black thorn all in bloom and then in the dark water, summer’s yellow flag irises coming green through the winter covers of golden brown.

Here is a poem written by the poet Alexander Pope who lived as a young person near this meadow.

ODE ON SOLITUDE

Happy the man, whose wish and care
A few paternal acres bound,
Content to breathe his native air,
In his own ground.

Whose herds with milk, whose fields with bread,
Whose flocks supply him with attire,
Whose trees in summer yield him shade
In winter fire

Blest, who can unconcernedly find
Hours, days, and years slide soft away
In health of body, peace of mind,
Quiet by day,

Sound sleep by night; study and ease,
Together mixed; sweet recreation;
And innocence, which most does please,
With meditation.

Thus let me live, unseen, unknown,
Thus unlamented let me die;
Steal from the world, and not a stone
Tell where I lie.

Snow drops all nearly gone
on
this grey, cold day in early spring.

The sun came out much later for a while. It always makes us smile.

  1. I really love your poem. It’s so beautiful and heartfelt. That last line, “My memories lie beneath their rough old boughs the new trees are for another’s life.” Poignant but not sad. Gorgeous.
