Today I wanted to try an arrangement that had a ratio 3:2 . A ratio I saw in some of Henri Matisse’s paintings of vases (3) and flowers (2).

Henri Matisse qualified as a lawyer but started painting when his mother gave him some paints during a time of convalescence following an attack of appendicitis. He decided to become an artist which was a great disappointment to his father. Here are some things he said about looking at what you are going to paint.

You must forget all your theories, all your ideas before the subject. What part of these is really your own will be expressed in your expression of the emotion awakened in you by the subject. (Funny this I don’t know anything)

Don’t wait for inspiration. It comes while we are working. (Well I was inspired by looking at his work but painting was fun.)

Nothing can be accomplished without love. (There is no problem with that.)

To end back where we began with Matisse.

Matisse and Picasso were friends and rivals. They both knew a lot about each others work. Picasso and Matisse ” painted with scissors” in their later years . They painted paper, cut it up into shapes and then arranged these into a composition. Here is a picture made by Picasso.

This is what Matisse said about his end of life experience, when he was suffering badly from intestinal problems.

I didn’t expect to recover from my second operation but since I did, I consider that I’m living on borrowed time. Every day that dawns is a gift to me and I take it in that way. I accept greatfully without looking beyond it. I completely forget my physical suffering and all the unpleasantness of my present condition and I think only of the joy of seeing the sun rise once more and of being able to work a little bit, even under difficult conditions.

I will leave you with these sayings about ratio:

What is the golden ratio? When you divide a line into 2 parts

and the longer part (a) divided by the smaller part (b) is equal to

the sum of (a) + (b) divided by (a), which both equal 1.618….

I’m not sure who was the first to find this out?
