This is an old-fashioned idiom describing a mood in which someone is very involved in their own thoughts and not paying attention to anything else.
” I could see she was in a brown study.”
This vase with:
3 stems of dry arching leafy mint,
6 oil poppy seed heads,
a stem of oak leaves,
a bunch of ash seeds
and two dry cardoons
are last year, this year and next year.
Their leaves, and pods becoming earth.
A long time to be in a brown study.
😅
Only ash holds the promise for next year.
Looking at these browns there are so many shades.
First look at the light browns think of earth, dirt, soil. They say these make you think of honesty, friendliness, healthy warmth and nature.
Dark brown is said to come in 54 shades think of wood in all its different browns.
Dark brown represents dependability, strength, humility and also a negativity of sadness and depression.
If a texture looks inviting we take this as a naptic invitation. An appeal to our sense of touch to have a positive tactile experience.

Gorgeous shades of browns, they always offer lovely contrasts. Another good thing about Brown, it was my maiden last name. 🙂
Ah , when my great – grandfather went to fight with British in the Boer wars his surname was Brownlee. He changed it to run away from home .A rebellious only child.
