We were either sleeping too heavily or they went quietly .

Walking a little way from where we parked there was an unusual monument to this event.
Now the story goes that an unpaying lover of captain Francesco Schettino was on the bridge of the Costa Concordia . Her distraction it is felt caused the Captain to deviate the ship’s course and he sailed too close to Idola del Giglio,
got stuck on the rock formations on the sea floor
and there the Costa Concordia capsized on 13 January 2012

Now some facts:

3,206 passengers

1,023 crew

27 passengers died

5 crew members died

2 members of the salvage team died.

The captain is serving a jail sentence.

Total cost of the disaster $2 billion and her salvage was one of the biggest maritime salvage operations.

On to a happier morning sight. New vessels being worked on.
